Boothy at the Teck event earlier this year

Boothy at the Teck event earlier this year

You know why Boothy is adorable?

Melanie Booth wasn’t quite sure what to do.
“Do I walk? Do I jog?” she thought. “It’s a long way from midfield.”
Such questions probably did not cross the mind of the previous players on their way to the penalty spot. But for Booth this was all pretty new. She had not taken a penalty kick since she was a 12 year old playing for the Burlington Youth Soccer Club — and that one hadn’t produced the desired result.
This wasn’t a rep tournament. It was the gold medal game at the Pan Am Games in front of a stadium full of people in Guadalajara, Mexico. It was the first opportunity for redemption since Canada’s women’s team failed to make it out of its group at the Women’s World Cup in Germany last summer.
Canadian head coach John Herdman announced veterans Christine Sinclair and Diana Matheson would take the first two shots. Now he was looking for volunteers.
“From a young age, I’ve grown a hatred of penalty kicks,” Booth said. But 15 years after her last attempt, here she was volunteering to take a penalty at a critical time for her team.
“Something just came over me,” Booth said. “With John, everything has been about not being afraid to fail. I felt like it was my time.”
